"Why So Serious?" site reveals more than just a poster

Come Monday, hardcore Batman fans may be treated to the latest and greatest piece out of a long line of movie media tid bits produced from "The Dark Knight's" storied alternate reality gaming campaign.

Last Thursday, "The Dark Knight" viral marketing site, whysoserious.com/itsallpartotheplan/ revealed a new poster for the film.

The site, which features numerous pictures of past U.S. presidents, was then updated.

Now, When you click on a picture frame with the name of the city closest to you, this message will appear:

"Gather with 300 of your closest friends at this exact spot on April 28th.

You'll need to be in contact with a partner-in-crime who has online access to relay your instructions once you're there. These instructions will give you the TRAIL to follow, but be sure to look both ways when crossing the street; we wouldn't want you to make an unscheduled visit to the ER now, would we?

Put on a smile and plan to spend about an hour or so bonding with your fellow clowns.

Check back here often for updates or changes. "

At the very bottom of each message is the coordinates of the spot you're suppose to meet at in each city.

Speculation by many internet blog sites is that the newest trailer for the film will be screened to select audiences who make to

'Dark Knight' viral marketing back at it again

The Batman viral campaign stepped up it's game and have added another layer to it's online interactive alternate reality gaming.

If you had happened to sign up on the Clown Travel Agency website then you were caught in a sting operation by Commissioner Gordon and the Gotham Police Major Crimes Unit then you recieved an email Wednesday from Gordon.

The email says: "OK friend, you're up to bat now. You have yourself a new assignment: Operation: Slipknot."

Clicking on Operation:Slipknot then brings up a website with pictures of fugitives.

Click on assignment button at the top right of the screen and you get the following message -

OPERATION SLIPKNOT

Gotham Police Major Crimes Unit, in cooperation with the GPD Internal Affairs Division, needs you to help track down numerous offenders that are fugitives from justice. Interestingly, we’ve tracked all of these individuals to the same last known location: Gotham Intercontinental Hotel. But we don’t know where they’ve gone from there.

Call the hotel and convince the concierge to ship you a certain package that’s been sent there for each fugitive. Use the provided intel and whatever means you can to convince him that you’re the intended recipient, your travel plans have changed, and he needs to send the package to you. Once received, you should have all you need to fill in the blanks as to that fugitive’s location.

We will add details about additional fugitives as they become available. Time is of the essence, as we have only a short time before the trail runs cold. Your cooperation in this operation will go a long way. Good luck.

Go to INTEL and get the following message -

You should have received your duplicate care packages by now. If not, contact the concierge at the Intercontinental and have him forward you your original package (reference #'s, as always, the total number of letters in your name followed by your last name shifted forward one letter like 15DBOEPMPSP). He's been instructed to send no-questions-asked if these reference #'s are used. Do NOT contact me.

Bon Voyage!

Now, that most of the fugitives have been caught, the site says:

EXCELLENT WORK!

Operation Slipknot is complete. Even though three suspects remain at large, your work represents a huge step forward in cleaning up our beloved city.

The fugitives are being arrested, handcuffed, and extradited back to Gotham for prosecution.

Doesn't it feel better to be on the right side of the law for once?

Thanks to you, Gotham can hold its head high once again. But do me one favor... stay out of trouble.

-Gordon.

New 'Dark Knight' trailer screened at NY Comic Con

In the new trailer for "The Dark Knight," set to be released in two weeks, there's more to the film than just the face off between the Joker and Batman.

Screened at New York's Comic Con, the trailer was shown unannounced by Warner Bros.

In the trailer there's what appears to be a love triangle between Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes.

Other scenes also show the Joker as a leader of the mob with him asking "Where do we begin?" and then answer with "Kill the Batman." These scenes possibly implicates him in the robbing of a mob-run bank.

Finally, it was has been described as a eerie scene, Harvey Dent makes the remark “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” which prophetically describes his future fate.

Hostage situation plays out at Harvey Dent press conference

Today at 3:00 p.m. EDT Harvey Dent's press conference was streamed live on Dent's campaign website, ibelieveinharveydent.com. However, as the conference was set to begin it was interrupted by disgruntled decorated Gotham Police Sergeant Francis Notaro, who took a female hostage. Notaro's been a strong opponent of Dent. In the past he had claimed that Harvey Dent offered him money to testify against an innocent cop.

Gotham police snipers attempted to take Notaro down, but missed a headshot which caused a breakdown in the situation. Dent entered the building without permission from the Gotham Police and traded himself for the female hostage. Dent was saved just before the broadcast cut off, and was declared a hero. Some think this solidifies that Dent will win the election for Gotham District Attorney.

Bat fans not scared of "Knight"

Heath Ledger's reinvention of the Joker had Batman fans as well as his colleagues talking. His crazy face, painted like that of a clown, was seen on the Internet by millions, and was THE image which nearly all early marketing of "The Dark Knight" depended on.

All of this, was before Ledger's sudden death on Jan. 22 of an accidental overdose of prescrition drugs. The film was already one of the years most anticipated film, now, the anticipation has reached a fever pitch.

"More people will come to see it because of his death," said Bill Ramey, founder of the fan Web site Batman-on-Film.com. "No doubt some people may be apprehensive about seeing it because there may be a little ghoulish factor about it. But I'm betting that more people now kind of look at it as a tribute to him, and the biggest tribute you could give someone is to go see it and enjoy his performance."

Ledger's role now is his next-to-last performance. "The Dark Knight" has already emerged as arguably the biggest movie featuring a posthumous role in Hollywood history.

"It was punk, it was 'A Clockwork Orange,' it was druggie. It was this kind of fantastic, anarchic look to him. This character had absolutely no rules whatsoever," said Christian Bale, who returns as Bruce Wayne and his alter ego, Batman. "That's not like any Joker I've ever seen before, what I saw Heath do."

Director Christopher Nolan, said he expected that when "The Dark Knight opens July 18, the performance would speak for itself -- that morbid thoughts of Ledger's death would not affect the way audiences views the film.

Where do they get those 'wonderful toys'?

Batman souvenir collectors have been in for a treat this movie season with the marketing build up for the July 18 release of the upcoming Batman movie, "The Dark Knight" and one such Utah man and his buddies cashed in.

Holladay resident Sean Leslie, 31, and his friends were among 28 people around the globe to snatch some 'Dark Knight' memorabilia in an online treasure hunt centered. And there is apparently promise of more as they anticipate further instructions in this ongoing contest.

Bowling balls were placed in bowling alleys in 23 U.S. cities as well as sites in London, Paris, Hong Kong and Sao Paulo as part of the viral marketing campaign.

Sitting at his computer waiting for Internet clues at the site titled Clown Travel Agency, Leslie directed his buds to Ritz Classic Lanes, 2280 S. State, where they found the items in a locker.

"It's like a Golden Ticket," said Leslie, a graphic designer. "We were just ecstatic."

Where it all leads, Leslie doesn't know. It isn't clear if it's the work of a wily Warner Bros. promotions team or a crafty Internet joker. Maybe it's The Joker. Whatever the source, Leslie and his friends are having a ball and hoping for a bigger reward at the end of the line.

Ledger's Joker continues to be biggest thief in the 'Knight'

With the release of even more creepy images showing Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in this summer's upcoming film, "The Dark Knight," he has yet again stolen the show from his co-stars and added hype to what is said to possibly be his best performance.

In one film still, Ledger is dressed in a white nurse's uniform, holding a gun and wearing a surgical mask.In another, with his painted face exposed with The Joker's evil grin in red, he aims his gun straight at the camera.

"Heath was an incredible actor and he brought a very, very scary Joker to life," said Bale. "Heath shocked us as The Joker and his death shocked all of us."

Ledger's role as The Joker is said to be his greatest performance, creatting early buzz that he could be nominated for an Academy award.

The Batman movie, being heavily promoted heavily with Ledger as the iconic sociopathic, psychotic villain, hit theaters in U.S. on July 18.

'The Dark Knight' marketing sparks interest, becomes cultural event

Marketers at the firm 42 Entertainment (subcontracted by the "The Dark Knight's" distributor, Warner Bros.) seem to have tapped into Batman fanboys and comic-book geeks by using a variety of untraditional techniques to build awareness of the film strategically.

They didn't waste anytime either. The promotion push began more than a year before the film's release on July 18 and it still going strong.

The many facets of the promo efforts are part viral marketing initiative, and part "advertainment." This is where the marketing begins to become something that absorbs it's participants. This is called alternate reality gaming, and it has become the favorite topic movie and comic blogs ever since it began.

Jonathan Waite, founder of the Alternate Reality Gaming Network (argn.com) sees "The Dark Knight's" multifaceted promo push as transcending marketing to exist as a stand-alone cultural event.

"This is looked upon as viral marketing, but you have to look at it as an engrossing experience — you have people getting very attached to the game," Waite said. "You're not a passive onlooker; you're taking an active role. And any time you take an active role, you're emotionally connecting. That's why people keep coming back: You make personal connections with others, and a community gets built."
The Harvey Dent campaign propaganda is meant to publicize Batman's "Dark Knight" nemesis, Two Face. At the beginning of the "Dark Knight" marketing campaign, an official Web site for the film redirected viewers to ibelieveinharveydent.com — a URL that lacks any references to Batman and urges "concerned Gotham citizens" to "take back Gotham City" by supporting the candidate's campaign for district attorney. It also tells people how to get involved in the fake grass-roots political campaign by filming videos, writing "Take Back Gotham" songs and coming out to meet the "Dentmobile," currently touring several dozen American cities. Yet another site, http://www.ibelieveinharveydenttoo.com/ gives a clue about some connection between the Joker and Two Face that may be explained in the film. The Joker's message is hidden however. Bringing up the site you'll see a blacked-out page with the message: "Page not found." But by clicking "select all" from your browser's edit menu, and an erie message is revealed: a long sequence of repeating Ha ha ha's. There's also a message embedded within the chuckles.
"I've never been a fan of the Batman series," writes a poster on the marketing-analysis blog "Catch Up Lady," "but this sort of thing makes me want to go see it."
